2010 Dive! Put-in-Bay Harbor Clean-Up cancelled
Due to the algae bloom in Lake Erie the Dive! Put-in-Bay Harbor Clean-up has been cancelled for 2010, Clean-Up Coordinator Samantha Kapusky said in a press release this weekend.
"The safety of the divers and land volunteers is our number one priority and at this point the alga is too wide spread to be able to safely clean up the harbor," Kapusky said.
The annual clean-up by volunteer divers and land volunteers was scheduled for Monday, September 20. John Hageman, Put-in-Bay Coordinator, said the algae bloom was too widespread in the downtown harbor not to affect divers. Hageman is employed by The Ohio State University's Stone Lab.
The clean-up committee will schedule the clean up again next year. Kapusky said the committee and the Put-in-Bay community appreciates the support of all the volunteers, island businesses and sponsors.
Dive! Put-in-Bay Harbor Clean-Up is a cooperative effort between island civic, business and community groups, The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab, Patrix’s Scuba and the Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers Inc. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission adds this event to the 2010 Coast Weeks Event Calendar to give us added support. If it was not for these organizations we would not able to do the clean up.
Kapusky extended a special thank you to Miller Boat Line and Island Transportation, for their ongoing support of the annual clean of Put-in-Bay's downtown Harbor.
