Plan
now to join us for Dive! Put-in-Bay
2009
Plan to spend a
couple of hours on Monday, September 21, 2009 pitching in to
help with the clean-up of Put-in-Bay's downtown harbor for Dive!
Put-in-Bay 2009.
The
18th annual clean-up is on the Ohio Lake Erie Commission's Coast
Weeks program again this year.
Put-in-Bay's community and government leaders are again partnering with
mainland experts in the dive field to coordinate this important dive
program.
Local sponsors are already working hard in planning the
island's 2009 Dive! Put-in-Bay
Harbor Clean-up.
“Our community is so
appreciative of all the volunteers who made the trip to the island
and of our local residents who helped collect more than 1,500 pounds
of trash from around the municipal docks last fall,” said Maggie
Beckford, Executive Director of the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce
and Visitors Bureau.
Beckford said Miller Boat Line and Island Transportation will remain the
event's primary sponsors. The Miller ferries will again transport
clean-up volunteers to and from the mainland.
Island Transportation, owners of the Downtown Bus and the Island Tour
Train, will transport volunteers from the Lime Kiln Dock to the
clean-up site downtown.
"We discovered three years ago that the success of this community project
relies predominantly on the many volunteers who actually do the
physical clean up downtown
and the businesses and individuals that support it," said Beckford.
Last
year more than 300 people volunteered to help clean-up Put-in-Bay's
downtown harbor.
Patrix Heschel, owner of Patrix Scuba and a certified PADI
Instructor, represents the Ohio
Council of Skin and Scuba Divers, another sponsor of the event.
This year Samantha Kapusky from Milan, MI has stepped in to be the
Operations Coordinator of the clean-up.
"Sam is filling in for Sandy Heschel who has her hands full with
two small children and a new home under construction," Beckford
said. "Sam's taking care of sending out information and getting
volunteers registered among many other things."
The Ohio State University's John Hageman will return as Put-in-Bay
Coordinator of the event.
"John takes care of locating and gathering together all the
necessary equipment needed to do the clean-up," Beckford said.
The Village of Put-in-Bay and the DeRivera Park Trust are also
important contributors in coordinating efforts so the project can be
completed safely within a short period of time.
The clean-up committee is currently seeking volunteers for the this
September's project and is also seeking sponsors for the event.
Anyone interesting in sponsoring the clean-up for $100 will have their
name printed on the back of the official 2008 Dive! Put-in-Bay
Harbor Clean-up T-shirt given to all volunteers.
Please download the Sponsor Form, complete the form and mail, along with
your check for $100 made out to Dive! Put-in-Bay Harbor Clean-up, to
the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce PO Box 250 Put-in-Bay, OH 43456.
Divers are reminded to bring their own equipment. We are also not
set up to refill air tanks so please make sure your tanks are full
prior to leaving the mainland.
